As a self-regulatory organization (SRO) registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the American Stock Exchange is mandated by the federal securities laws to have rules and regulations in place to prevent fraudulent and manipulative practices, to promote just and equitable principles of trade, and to protect investors and the public interest. The Exchange also must have the capacity to enforce compliance by its members and member firms with the provisions of the federal securities laws, the rules and regulations of the SEC, and the Constitution and rules of the American Stock Exchange.

While almost every area of the Exchange plays some role in our self-regulatory effort, the primary tasks of monitoring trading in markets by member firms and their customers, and enforcing compliance with the securities laws and our Constitution and rules is the responsibility of the American Stock Exchange Division of Regulation and Compliance.
