Access Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is an emerging pharmaceutical company focused on developing both novel low development risk product candidates and technologies with longer-term major product opportunities. Access has proprietary patents or rights to seven drug delivery technology platforms: synthetic polymer targeted delivery; vitamin mediated targeted delivery; vitamin mediated oral delivery; bioerodible cross-linker technology; mucoadhesive disc technology; hydrogel particle aggregate technology; and Residerm topical delivery. The company is marketing amlexanox 5% paste, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved product for the treatment of canker sores, under the trade names Aphthasol, Aptheal and Zindaclin. In September 2001, Strakan Ltd., the company's U.K. partner, received marketing authorization to market amlexanox 5% paste in the U.K. under the trade name Aptheal. In addition, Strakan Ltd. has used the company's Residerm technology to develop zinc clindamycin for the treatment of acne. Strakan began marketing zinc clindamycin in the U.K. under the trade name Zindaclin in March 2002. The process to achieve marketing authorization for Zindaclin throughout Europe has been initiated, with approvals in most European Union countries. On Jan. 8, 2004, the company announced that it had signed a licensing agreement with Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, a division of Wyeth, granting Wyeth the North American rights to develop and market an OTC product utilizing its OraDisc technology pending any required regulatory approvals. This agreement grants an exclusive license to market the OraDisc product in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, with additional rights to extend the marketing rights worldwide. |
