Criteria for Inclusion

The S&P MidCap 400 is maintained by the S&P Index Committee, a team of Standard & Poor's economists and index analysts. This team meets regularly and ensures that the index remains an accurate measure of mid-sized companies.

A company must meet certain conditions in order to become part of the S&P MidCap 400:

  • U.S. company
  • Market cap range between $1 billion - $4 billion
  • Financial viability
  • Adequate liquidity and reasonable price
  • Public float of at least 40%
  • Sector representation
  • Must be an operating company

If a company violates one or more of the conditions for index inclusion, or is involved in a merger, acquisition or significant restructuring, that company may be removed from the S&P MidCap 400.

For more detailed information, see the S&P MidCap 400 Index Fact Sheet.
